Guys..How can I help my husband get out of a depression? Stresses at work, home, kids. What would you suggest?

He commutes out of state for work each week and is home on the weekends. He says he feels like he is failing in every aspect of his life. I want to help him but dont know what to do… any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Depression is not something that you can cure by making pancakes. He needs to seek professional help that you are probably not qualified to give him. Check your health insurance to see what type of mental health policy you have.

There is nothing you can do, he has to work it out for himself. It’s just the way men are. If you really want to help him, the only thing you can do is to be supportive of whatever action he wants to take to correct this problem for himself.

Maybe you and the kids could make him a cake just because. Something like that to show him that he’s special and that your family appreciates how hard he works for them. It’s not a permanent fix but it helps to have a reminder that there’s people in your corner.

find a job closer to home or relocate….work does not have to be that stressful. If he keeps that up, he may lose his job…then what?

Tell him that it’s okay to feel this way. Tell him that although you don’t feel the same way. Give him a massage. Tell him that you really appreciate all that he is doing and it’s making you and the kids feeling very lucky to have someone like him. Encourage him to look for a job closer to home or suggest moving closer to the job. Tell him, no matter what his family is going to be there for him.

Exercise is another great way to fight depression. Go for a walk as a family when he gets back. Walks don’t cost money. Educate the kids that dad is not around for the sake of the family. He is working very hard. Have the kids make cards for him and do something nice for him when he gets home from work.

Get a web camera so that you all can see each other every night while he’s away.

If all else fails, suggest a therapist or a counsellor to help.
