I want to work from home as a typist and data entry clerk. However, I don’t want to fall for a scam, as there are too many of these on the internet.
So what are the BEST and GENUINE work-at-home typing jobs I can join?
Are you familiar with medical terms?
If so, ask at busy testing centers. They have a back-log of recordings of doctors’ reports stacked up waiting to be typed and sent onto the patient’s GP.
They may prefer typists to work on-site, or may contract out typing jobs when they get too busy.

Has anyone done the work at home jobs typing ads & paid start up fee and actually made money? Are they legit?
Based on what I have seen, there are very few work-at-home schemes that are legit. I would have serious doubts about any job that requires you to pay them first. That sends up red flags in my head. Check out some tips to avoid scammers.

Theres ARE some legit work at home jobs, my friend works from home doing customer service for an office product company. I used to work at home doing website maintenance, etc.
A work at home job "typing ads" probably means you would be in internet spammer/scammer at best. I would do some serious research, including their local Better Business Bureau among other things.

real free at home typing jobs?
I would like to find a non-scam and free at home typing job.
The only legit ones I know of are medical transcribing for Doctors’ offices- I have a friend who does it but she took a course in medical terminology to get into it-
You could advertise yourself on Craigslist.org for free and see if anyone needs your services-

If you are an accomplished typist – word processor and have recently visited your local 4-year university librarian, you can apply as a "certified" graduate typist, earning between $1.50 to $2.00 per page for typing a master or doctoral thesis. The librarian will ask the following questions in order to qualify you as a "certified" typist:
(1) Are you familiar and have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word?
(2) Are you able to set up section breaks along with appropriate placement of auto page numbering in the footer/header?
(3) Are you familiar with setting up a scheme with emphasis on the proper use of auto numbering, such as 1., 1.1, (a), (i), etc.?
(4) Do you have access to a scanner with built-in OCR sofware?
(5) Do you have access to a high-speed laser quality printer?
If you answer all the above questions in the affirmative, the librarian will provide you with a sample of the typing format template (i.e., margin settings, font selection, page set up, etc.) in order to complete these projects.
The librarian will then place your name on a list of "certified" graduate typists. This "certified’ list will be given to various department heads so that any graduate student seeking your services can easily contact you directly from this list.
An average weekend income is about $300-$400 for two days of work.

this site has various categories where you can register yourself as an expert and offer help and assistance to online client. there are lots and lots of diverse categories, from religion help, tutoring, to computer stuff etc. so there must be a category of your interest as well.
my friend told me that he has made about 500 USD in a month (well he actually might have worked for only a few hours really because we are full time students as well) from that site and that they would be sending the money soon enough, i was kinda apprehensive if that would happen. but guess what, the check arrived after 5 or 6 days. he got around 410 USD because some of the money was cut as tax and rest was the commission for the site.
you must check out the site yourself. if u register as an expert, u wud be required to download their messenger so that the clients can contact u for help.

well I don’t Know anyone try online home typing
but I know some do Translation From Home and some do Editing
and Graphic Design From home and its rewording but not as you work full time office Job , but look at the Bright side
you will not spend money/effort on transportation, and as you are at home you will spend less money on clothes ( including dry cleaning and Ironing)
and last but not least you got to spend more time at home with your family which is very important if you have children under 4 years old.

NO! This- like 99% of the "work at home" websites- is a scam. All they will do is send you a book with instructions and a list of companies to contact to apply for these jobs. And you will NOT get your $40 back.
EDIT: The FREE survey websites given by the poster below are not entirely scams (I am a member on a few of the "survey sites") but they are not genuine "make money" surveys. They reward you with sweepstakes entries and points you can spend only on the website and it’s affiliates. I’ve gotten several free magazine subscriptions from e-rewards.com, for instance. The "pay-to-sign-up" survey sites are scams. Surveys are given by people who need something from YOU. You don’t pay them to give an opinion and you don’t need to pay someone else to find them. The work-at-home sites of the below poster are scams and all require an initial investment in software and start-up "kits" and smell VERY fishy.
The fact of the matter is that nobody gets money for doing nothing and if the owners of these websites made so much money for doing what they tell YOU to do, they’d keep it to themselves.

I found my secretary from an ad she placed in a local shopper’s newspaper ten years ago. You can also list on www.craigslist.org, but people will want your rates. You can also put up business cards at copy centers and other places where small business people would go. You might also try colleges, but most of them do their own typing these days.

I would like to know why do I have to pay a company a fee to do typing or data entry jobs from home?
If I am willing to work for a company doing this kind of work why do I pay a fee for training materials or whatever when I already know how to type. I think I should be provided with everything free of charge.
Don’t. They are scams if they ask you to pay a fee. But, on the other hand, there are companies that facilitate getting these kinds of jobs online, and they are legit. The fee provides you access to services you would normally pay for if you ran your own home-based business. I’ve used two different ones over the years, and occasionally go back to them when I find local work is getting a bit thin. Check for yourself to see if they fit your needs…

Now, if you are willing to do freelance work, do what I did. I went to several of the businesses in my area that routinely brings in temp. help from the various agencies and offered my services to them. My offer was fairly simple, I charged them less than the temp agencies charged, more that what their employees recieved. In time, I hired part timers, usually college students and did real well at this.
